We welcomed our mini goldendoodle 7, almost seven years ago. Most recently, losing our Viva to a brain tumor in July of 2020. We were lucky enough to have Vegas for five years (totally wish it was longer). Our life has changed dramatically in the past few years with the passing of our two goldendoodles, Vegas and Viva. He is known as one of the best skate sharpeners in the world! If you live in Charlotte and play hockey, or have a family member who plays, be sure to contact him. Not only winning two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early ’90’s, but most recently winning the Calder Cup with the Charlotte Checkers, amongst many other accolades. Add in a tablespoon of the fresh parsley and the lemon juice. Once the nuts have browned nicely, remove pan from heat. Keep stirring as they can burn rather quickly. You will need to stand by the pan until the almonds have browned. Melt the remaining four tablespoons of butter. Remove fish and reserve on a plate or platter.Ĭlean the pan. Try not to move the fish around in the pan, as you can run the risk of the flesh breaking apart. Allow to cook and sear for about three to four minutes. Recorded in Munich during sessions for ELO's 1979 Discovery LP, "Don't Bring Me Down" emerged almost whole cloth from Lynne, who wrote the tune on piano and immediately moved to complete the backing track on his own, using a slowed-down drum tape from a previous song to create the tune's trademark beat. The song represents the first time the band released a track without strings, and by the Electric Light Orchestra's ornate arrangement standards, it's positively rudimentary. "Don't Bring Me Down" has got those drums, and oddly enough, that's about all it has. That magnificent, booming sound that's graced records by Tom Petty ("Running Down a Dream"), Roy Orbison ("You Got It"), even the Beatles ("Free as a Bird"). You can hear a Jeff Lynne song from a couple miles down the road: It's all in the bass drum. Heck, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" even sounds badass when interpreted by an orchestra: Just try to stop yourself from fist-pumping while watching this video of the band performing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.ĩ7: Electric Light Orchestra, "Don't Bring Me Down"Įlectric Light Orchestra's 1979 smash "Don't Bring Me Down" may just be Jeff Lynne's most concise and representative musical statement. In terms of ’80s metal classics, however, the tune is the Platonic ideal: a headbanging-worthy repeating riff, gigantic drums, a ripping solo and an indelible refrain - sing it now - " Here I am, rock you like a hurricane."Īlthough the official video is full of ’80s clichés (women dressed as animals, actual zoo animals, absurd sci-fi flourishes), the campy edge of the music never overshadows the ferocious nature of the song. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" propelled the German metal band’s Love at First Sting album into the Billboard Top 10, although the song itself only hit No. It's been championed by The Simpsons, college football teams and a Dave Eggers novel. Since its release in 1984, the Scorpions’ "‘Rock You Like a Hurricane" has become ubiquitous. The story might be slightly turbulent, but the music certainly jams.ĩ8: Scorpions, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" Livgren’s engaging storyline of a man embattled with the voices and visions in his head is driven forward by guitar riffing, organ swells and solos from nearly every member in the band. Next to some of the proggier moments on Leftoverture, "Carry On Wayward Son" feels comparatively restrained and compact, even though it stretches out across nearly five and a half minutes. Once the members heard the initial idea for "Carry On Wayward Son," they knew the songwriting gold that they had on hand and went straight into the recording studio without even pausing to rehearse the track. Luckily, guitarist Kerry Livgren was overflowing creatively with ideas and he still had one song that he hadn’t shared with the band. Taking a short breather to record what would become their fourth album, 1976's Leftoverture, frontman Steve Walsh ran into writer’s block. Like many groups in the time period, Kansas toured and recorded relentlessly, supporting three albums that sold modestly despite their growing live following. The now-familiar a capella intro for "Carry On Wayward Son" was the sonic hook that would help Kansas score their first major hit, a feat that was a long time coming for the band. We're guessing record sales from this song have paid for that ticket many times over by now. "I Can't Drive 55," as Hagar has explained many times, was inspired by a real-life incident that found him pulled over for doing 62 late at night on an empty highway in upstate New York. This new level of fame also paved the way for him to join Van Halen in 1985. We're not saying Hagar was directly responsible for the late-'80s national law changes that allowed states to once again set speed limits higher than 55, but it certainly couldn't have hurt. Nearly a decade of constant touring and increasing record sales – remember "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy?" – had already established Hagar as a rock star prior to the release of his 1984 VOA album.īut the Red Rocker really hit a nerve with the message of the record's first single, which – aided by a truly entertaining video – quickly made him a household name and bona-fide arena headliner. Who better to get our Top 100 Classic Rock Songs list off to a fast start than Sammy Hagar and his anti-speed limit anthem, "I Can't Drive 55?" The power cables are a mix of wire and a length of wool, given a coating of plastic putty to solidify down and make it easy to paint. The arms came from Reaver Jetbike riders, and needed a lot of work to incorporate the cannon and power cabling I intended to run through them. The Death Jester took a little more work, his body coming from a Dark Eldar Wych, and head from the Empire Wizard set. The flaming sword, which i always intended at the time to use as a piece of wargear called The Storied Sword, came from an Empire Wizard set. The SOlitaire as you can is basically done here.Īgain using Corsair legs for both models, the Solitaire for the bare chest of a Hail Caeser Celtic Warrior, and the head of a Corsair (with face completely covered and smoothed). The Death Jester and Solitaire got reasonably similtanious attention once I had a plan in my head. The legs are Dark Elf Corsair, the body from a Craftworld Eldar Guardian. I wanted her striding forward, holding a lamp at the very least. I worked on the Shadowseer first, my concept for her being a guide, or more accurately a lighthouse. These three together were a brilliant support group for a Dark Eldar army, so of course I needed to customize. MacDailyNews Take: If this sounds familiar to you, thank you for being a regular reader of MacDailyNews!ĭieter Rams’ 10 principles for good design “Those who have taken over are now listening to what customers are saying.” “Since Jony Ive left, there’s not that gravitational force driving aesthetic before function,” Paul Found, a lecturer in industrial design at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, England. Or the Apple TV remote, whose symmetry made it visually appealing, but meant that users often inadvertently pressed the wrong buttons by holding it upside down. The latest iterations have ditched the curved edges that made the display liable to crack if dropped on its side. Perhaps this would have happened under Ive, but Evans Hankey, who now heads the industrial design team, has overseen plenty of other tweaks that seem to indicate a change of philosophy. Gone is the so-called “butterfly” keyboard, which rendered the device thinner but whose clunky mechanics made typing more difficult farewell too to the Touch Bar, a touch sensitive strip display along the top of the keyboard which could show functions for the web browser one moment and mixing tools for music apps the next, but was almost impossible to use without looking back are HDMI ports, which let you plug the computer into high-definition displays without using an adapter. Headline features released five years ago under Ive’s aegis have been scrapped. Monday’s unveiling of a new Macbook Pro lineup of laptops provides evidence of the shift. From the iPhone to Apple TV to the Macbook, gone are the days of “The user be damned, we think this looks cool.” Since he stepped down as chief designer at the end of 2019, Apple seems to have reemphasized function. There was a sense that, without the moderating influence of the late Steve Jobs, perhaps Ive started to prioritize aesthetics a little too much. Steve Jobs’ design-first approach to Apple product development was considered pioneering, but after Jobs, with Jony Ive in charge of design, there were, at times, questions as to whether a device’s appearance took precedence over its ease of use. Sosin et al ( 14) found the injury rate for asphalt to be six times that of sand, with rubber mats and gravel having rates twice that of sand. Studies investigating surface-specific injury rates show an increased risk of injury when falling onto a non-impact-absorbing surface. To comply with the Canadian Standards Association, surfacing under playground equipment must be able to attenuate impact to a specific standard as measured by the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) and, therefore, reduce the risk of serious injury from a fall. The literature also shows an increased risk of injury when falling on to a non-impact-absorbing surface ( 4, 13). The Canadian Standards Association, an organization that develops product standards to promote public safety and health, recognizes playground surfacing as one of the main risk factors for playground injury ( 12). Fracture of the upper extremities is the most common playground injury ( 10, 11). Since the introduction of playground safety standards, severe head injuries have become increasingly rare ( 8, 9). In Canada, 36% of playground injuries occur on school playgrounds and 57% of playground injuries are sustained by children five to nine years of age ( 3). These falls usually occur from equipment such as monkey bars, track rides and jungle gyms that require upper body strength ( 6, 7). Studies show that 67% of playground injuries are caused by falls from equipment to the ground, and that the height of fall is a risk factor for injury ( 3, 4) and severe injury ( 5). In Canada, approximately 2500 children 14 years of age and younger are admitted to hospital for serious injuries resulting from a playground fall every year ( 2). Visit the website at any time and purchase playing equipment with a single click of a button. Each year, an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 children in Canada are treated in hospital emergency departments for playground-related injuries ( 1).
